Who should this digital teaching resource be used with? (ie year/grade)

Voki is an excellent teaching resource for middle to upper primary, years 3-6. It’s a fun way to create your own avatar and an interesting way for a child to demonstrate his/her learning. A primary school aged child with basic knowledge on the internet and web tools would find this resource easy to use.

Years 3-4 and 5-6 could use this program as per ACTDIP013 and ACTDIP022 of the digital technologies strand.

  • Plan, create and communicate ideas and information independently and with others, applying agreed ethical and social protocols

How should it be used? (e.g. individual, whole class)

It would ideally be an individual based project, allowing the students to make their Voki look like them, or use their own creativity to make an interesting character. It would be too tricky to use a Voki in a whole class project, as all students would want to have input in its design. However, it could work in small groups. In groups it could also be effective if using the presentation feature of Voki as opposed to the single avatar.

Which subject or learning area would it be most appropriate to use in?

Voki can be used in ELA, math, science, social studies, or foreign language classes (Voki, 2016). It can either be used as the basis for the lesson, or for individuals, or groups to work on separate topics during a class.

Year 3 Mathematics: Represent and solve problems involving multiplication using efficient mental and written strategies and appropriate digital technologies (ACMNA057)

Year 3 Science:  Consider the elements of fair tests and use formal measurements and digital technologies as appropriate, to make and record observations accurately (ACSIS055)

Identify the strengths of this teaching resource:

It is an interactive and engaging resource where the students are directly involved in the learning, or creating process. It is also a multi-purpose resource, assisting several different learning areas as highlighted above. Voki is an exciting way to teach regular subjects, as well as including their own teaching resources for teachers to use in lessons. Voki Teach has lessons from K – Year 6.

Identify any weaknesses of this teaching resource:

If students are left to their own devices there is opportunity for them to take advantage of the text to voice feature. If designing their own Voki, they may choose a design and use text that is inappropriate in a classroom setting.

Also, payment is required to access certain features from this site, including the Voki Teach section.

Explain any ideas you may have for further use of this teaching resource:

Voki is a great resource which can be used by both teachers and students to integrate technology into the classroom. Whilst it covers the basic learning areas, it would not be something to be frequently used in order to keep its creative element. Also, with certain features requiring payment, users may not be able to harness its full potential.
